Geometric planter with sprigs on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an angular, faceted pot drawn in thin black outline, with three sprigs of plant growing from its top. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the design sits centrally on the outer upper arm against a grey sleeve and blue background.

Sit down, the lot of you, and stop pretending you remember the dinner ladies' names. I'll tell you about the pot instead, because nobody in this hall has forgotten the pot.

Nineteen eighty-one, the kiln in the old craft block, and Gary Ashworth made a planter in double maths. He was meant to be making a bowl. He pinched it into five sides because he'd been reading about crystals in the library and wanted corners. Mr Feeney said it looked like a pentagon that had lost an argument. Gary took it home to dry on his radiator, and it came back split along one edge like a dropped plate.
Nobody wanted it. So Mrs Hollis, who ran the gardening club out behind the bike sheds, filled it with compost and pushed in three cuttings from her own kitchen window: a rosemary, a feathery thing she called yarrow, and a sprig of something with small white buds she wouldn't name until it flowered. She said a crack only matters if you let it stop you. Then she set it on the sill of Room Nine, where the afternoon sun came in long and yellow across the register.
Forty years on, I went back to look. The building's flats now. But the pot was in a skip out the back, and I took it home in my coat. Every cutting I've ever planted came from that cracked corner. The rosemary's still going on my kitchen sill, out of a bit of broken clay, and it's the only thing I've ever kept alive for longer than a season.
