Geometric red and black full sleeve tattoo
Geometric · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A full arm sleeve covering the shoulder, upper arm and forearm, with a large red and grey eight-pointed star medallion at its centre. The shoulder and upper arm are filled with bold red and black scalloped wave bands, while the forearm carries a dense field of black rosettes with red centres. Clean, hard-edged linework and solid black fills are set against red and grey shading, and the three photographs show the sleeve from front, side and back.

Snow had sealed the Carrow Pass by noon, and Maud Ellery had pulled the settle closer to the hearth so we could all hear her. Don't look at the door, she said, the door has heard enough. Thirty winters ago a tiler came up the valley road with a roll of drawings under his arm and a wife who never sat still. He asked for work for a month, and the innkeeper gave him the back parlour floor.

He laid it in grey slate and red clay, a star of eight points in the middle of the room, and round it a band of wave-curls that rolled like a sea he had never seen. Each curl had to meet its neighbour exactly or the whole thing would slide. He measured with a knotted cord and a brass square, and he would not let anyone walk on the star until it was grouted. Every evening he counted his tiles aloud, and every morning there was one fewer than the night before.
The wife found the missing ones. She had been lifting them and setting them out in the snow beyond the yard, in rings of black rosettes, each with a red heart cut from the clay he had kept back for last. When he came out to shout, she only pointed at the drifts and told him to count them now. He could not. The rosettes went on past the gate and over the wall, and when the thaw came the valley was full of little flowers no one had planted.
The floor is still there, Maud said, though the parlour is a larder now. Step on the star and you will feel it give, just slightly, as if something breathes under the stone. The tiler left in spring with his square and his cord and nothing else. Mind you pay the reckoning before you go up, because nobody who skips the reckoning sleeps through the night in this house.
