Geometric symbols and owl on lower legs
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
Two black and grey tattoos sit side by side on a lower leg. The left panel has a vertical column of thin linework circles, triangles and dots with soft black feather-like shapes behind it. The right panel shows a large dark owl filled with a starry night sky, with a small standing figure on a branch at its centre, and the shading is smooth and high in contrast.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the fire, because the wind comes over Hollin Gap after dark and it does not care who it chills. You asked me about the owl. Everyone asks about the owl. That one has sat on the old larch above the track since before my grandmother's grandmother walked the pass with a goat on a rope.

The woman who climbed up to it was called Marra Teske, a surveyor's daughter from the valley towns, which meant she carried a brass compass and no patience. She had been sent to draw the line for a road that would cut the pass in two. Every night she measured the stars against the ridge, and every night the owl turned its head to watch her, its feathers full of the same stars, so she could never tell which lights were in the sky and which were in the bird.
On the thirteenth night she climbed to the larch and found a man sitting on the lowest branch, very still, the way a shepherd sits when he has given up on the flock. He told her the owl kept a tally of every traveller ever lost in the pass, written in triangles and circles down its wing, one mark for each name. Marra laughed at him. Then she looked, and the marks were there, and her own name was the last one, still open.
She took out the compass, set it down on the branch, and drew a single straight line through the circles, right across the ridge where the road would have gone. The owl shut its eyes. The road was never built, the pass is still there, and if you come up in the dark you will hear it breathing. Now bank that fire, and mind the edge.
