Gold and silver metallic temporary tattoos
Botanical · Chest · Colour · Photo
A close crop of a woman's chest, wrist and upper arm, with metallic gold and silver temporary tattoos applied to the skin. The gold chest piece and wrist band show leaves, curling vines and paisley-style patterns in fine outline, while the silver band on the upper arm has a lace-like henna-style pattern. The warm coral top and soft green background sit behind the skin, and her face is cropped out of the frame.

Rain had been falling on the Thursday market since before dawn, and Mabel Crane had not sold a single sheet of foil. Her stall sat under a tarpaulin at the end of Cooper's Row, where the cobbles dip toward the drain. Her tins were lined up in rows: gold leaf wrapped in tissue, silver stamped with lace, and a flat tin of leaves no bigger than a thumbnail, each one pressed from a brass block her father had cut before his hands went stiff.

A boy came up the row at noon with wet hair and a coin held tight in his fist. He said his grandmother wanted a vine, one that climbed and turned back on itself like the ironwork over her door, and that she could no longer walk down the hill to buy it. Mabel knew the pattern. Her father had cut it for the chapel gate, and for every bride in the parish who wanted her wrists dressed before the vestry bell.
She laid a strip of gold on his palm, pressed it with a warm thumb, and counted slowly to ten. "It won't wash off in the rain," she said. "Nor in the bath. It lifts in a month, the way a leaf lets go in autumn, and no one has to pick it off."
He studied the vine a long while, then shook his head. "Then it'll be gone by the spring."
"Yes," said Mabel, and took his coin, and gave him a silver leaf besides for his trouble. That evening, when the tarpaulin was rolled and the stalls had gone, she walked up the hill herself and found the grandmother at her window. The boy had already pressed the gold to her wrist, and the wet glass made it shine like a lamp left on in the dark.
