Goldfish tattoo design on tracing paper
Fine line · Colour · Flash
A fancy goldfish with long flowing fins is drawn in navy ink on translucent tracing paper, with scale patterns and small bubbles around the head. Above it, a purple pencil sketch shows the same fish in a looser, unfinished form. The fine, even linework is set against a pale cream paper background, with the tracing sheet angled diagonally across the frame.

The bowl rides on the passenger seat because you would not leave it in the motel. Two hundred miles of white road run between Tonopah and nothing, and the fish turns slow circles in its water, its tail unspooling like silk drawn from a spool. You keep glancing at it. Your uncle Aurelio always said a goldfish that swims too calmly is either sick or thinking, and you never settled which he meant.

At the petrol station by the dry lake, a boy in a sun-faded vest asks whether the fish is for sale. You say no. He points at the tracing paper folded on the dashboard, where you inked its fins last night by the lamp, the navy lines sinking a little into the grain. He says it looks like the fish is swimming through the drawing. You laugh, but ahead the heat lifts the road into a silver lake, and for a moment the paper on the dash lifts too, as if it wants to follow.
You do not reach the lake. You reach the place Aurelio asked for, a playa that flooded once in your childhood and held a sheet of rain for a week last spring. The water here is hardly deep enough to cover a hand. You kneel on the cracked clay, tip the bowl, and the fish slides out in one cool rush. It hangs in the shallows, fins fanning wide, as if it has read the drawing and is only now learning to trust it.
Behind you the wind takes the tracing sheet off the dashboard and carries it across the flats, navy lines flickering like a tail. You do not chase it. The mirage on the horizon has gone flat and ordinary, and the water at your feet is the only lake you need.
