Heart of treble clef and piano keys on ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a heart outline built from a treble clef on the left and a bass clef on the right, with a row of piano keys filling the lower right half and two music notes dots beside it. The linework is clean and uniform in black ink with no shading, giving a simple, flat appearance. The design sits on the side of the torso against a plain, softly lit skin tone background.

You reach the bakery at half four, when the street is still black and the launderette opposite has its shutter down. The ovens have been ticking since three, and flour hangs in the lamplight like dust in a church. You hang your coat on the nail behind the back door, tie your apron twice round, and notice the old upright piano shoved against the proving cabinet, its lid chipped at one corner, the way it has been every morning for eleven years.

Nobody plays it. Stan, who owned the shop before Mrs Okonedo, used it as a bench for invoices, and once a week a ginger cat slept on the lid. Today the dough needs its ninety minutes, so you wipe your hands, lift the lid and press middle C. It sticks, swollen with damp, and you have to work it loose with a butter knife until it drops with a dull, honest thunk. The note carries into the cold kitchen and nobody complains.
Under the keys, where the felt has come away, you find a sheet of paper folded into a square. Someone has drawn a heart in pencil, its left half a treble clef curling round and round, its right half a bass clef with two dots beside it like crumbs. Along the bottom runs a row of keys. Underneath, in Stan's cramped capitals: PLAY IT WHEN THE BREAD IS READY. DON'T WAIT FOR ME.
At six the first tray comes out golden and crackling. You lean on the piano, press the four notes he wrote out, and across the road the launderette shutter begins to rattle up.
