Flash design of a horned helmeted skull with two purple roses and a cream banner with lettering, in neo-traditional style with speckled shading.

Horned helmet skull with roses and banner

Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

A horned helmet sits over a snarling skull with a visible row of teeth, framed by two purple roses with green leaves and a cream scroll banner carrying the lettering Dragonborn. The linework is bold and dark, with cream horns, grey steel helmet plates and purple petals rendered in flat fills. A speckled dotwork texture surrounds the subject on a plain grey backdrop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Wren, the horned helmet finally fitted Tomas, though he swears the left ear pinches, and I have told him the rivets are to blame and not the smith. We are four days up the Corrie Pass now and the snow has not yet decided whether to fall or to hold off. Haldane has the cart-mules bedded down in the lee of the ridge, and every evening he sits by the fire with his brush and his little pot of sloe ink, lettering the banner for the lowland clans.

The jaw is the thing they all stop to look at. The hunters found the skull wedged in the scree at the col, teeth still set in a snarl, and Haldane said it would go on the brow of the helmet as a warning. Your mother's purple roses went on either side, the ones you pressed in the book last autumn. Haldane says flowers keep the bad luck calm, and I have decided to believe him.

Last night the wind came through the notch and the sentries heard a low singing under the ice, a note that went on longer than any of us could hold a breath. In the morning the jaw was gone from the cairn. Tomas had slept with the helmet on his knee, so nobody took it from him. In the fresh snow beside the path there are prints as wide as a cartwheel, and they go uphill, not down.

Haldane says the wyrm is only ever asleep in high places, and that it will wake for the right song. I have left a rose on the cairn anyway, in case it is partial to them. Come down to meet us before the thaw, and bring me that brush.
