Horse head tattoo on the ribs

Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black horse head in profile sits on the side of the ribs, with long, sweeping strokes forming the mane and tapering lines defining the face and neck. The design is rendered in bold black linework with no colour, and the sharp, flowing edges give it a graphic feel. The skin fills most of the frame, with a dark crop top above and jeans and a belt below, and the blurred green background sits to the right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last bucket of oats was gone by six, and by seven Nell had found the padlock on the paddock gate hanging open, which meant Mr Halloran had been down before her. Caspar stood just inside the hedge, head high, as if he had been waiting for the interval to end and could not understand why nobody had called him back.

Halloran's had been three rings once, with a brass band and a girl who flew from the top pole into a net that smelt of wet rope. Now it was one caravan of mismatched costumes, a generator that coughed every evening at eight, and a field outside Lincoln where the grass grew long because nobody was paid to cut it. The big top had gone to a scrap man in Doncaster. Mr Halloran had shaken Nell's hand and said the horses would find good homes, and she had nodded, because she believed him about as far as she could throw the generator.

Caspar let her take the halter without fuss. Under the security lamp his coat was black as a coal range, and his mane fell in long strokes past the withers, the way it had when she first saw him as a foal in a Cheshire yard. She had taught him to lower his head for applause, one stiff bow for every cheer. Tonight he bent to the gate chain instead and worked the links loose with his lip, patient as a man picking a lock, and when the last one dropped he stepped into the lane without looking back at the lights.

She took the halter off at the stile and folded it over her arm. Caspar lifted his head once towards the ring field, then turned his back on it and trotted up the lane, mane streaming behind him like a dark flag. By morning the field was empty except for a single black hair snagged on the barbed wire, stirring in the wind as if someone had drawn it there in ink and then forgotten to finish the line.
