Japanese peony and wave full sleeve

Japanese · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A full sleeve tattoo covers the arm from the shoulder to the wrist, showing peony blooms, a large rising wave, swirling clouds and a lotus-like flower near the forearm. The linework is bold and the shading is soft and smooth, building depth in the petals and water. The image is shown in black and grey with a warm skin tone, and the tattoo fills most of the frame against a blurred outdoor background.

The tide came up the lane at Morrow Cove the spring the Pellew sisters let the top floor of the boarding house to a painter from over the hills. Nobody in the village had ever seen a man carry a bolt of silk the length of a fishing boat, and nobody knew what he wanted with the wave that rolled off it when it was unrolled on the parlour floor.

He drew peonies first, great heavy heads of them, and then a wave that rose behind them like a held breath. Mrs Pellew said the water looked so real it would soak the rugs. Her younger sister Ada said it looked hungry. The painter only smiled and asked for more lamp oil, because the light off the sea was never steady enough to see the shading by.

On the last night of his stay the cloud came down over the cove and the wave on the silk seemed to lift. Ada went up with a candle and found the sheet pinned to the wall, the water curling white at its crest, and the lotus at the bottom bent just so over a thin black line that ran down to the floor. The painter was gone. His bed was made. On the sill sat a single wet bloom, its petals still heavy with the rain that had come in through the open window.

The Pellews kept the silk in the linen press. Each spring, when the tide came up the lane, they hung it out and counted the petals, and they never once got the same number twice.
