Kaiju head on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A roaring, horned kaiju head faces right, with open jaws showing rows of teeth and a spiked crest and dorsal plates along its back. The linework is textured with heavy shading and fine hatching across the scaly skin, giving the creature depth and volume. The tattoo is entirely black and grey and fills the frame against pale skin on the upper back.

Its jaws opened so wide I could count the teeth from the pier. It roared. Not a seal's bark or a gull's shriek, but a sound that came up through the planks and into my back teeth.

Old Ewan at the shop says it has come up every March since his grandfather's time, and that you have to give it something or it takes a boat. I laughed at him. I stopped laughing when the Mhairi lurched on her mooring and the whole bay went white around her keel.
Last night I walked down with the tin of pilchards Ewan pressed on me and a torch that barely worked. I stood at the end of the pier and did not feel brave. The water boiled. Then the great head rose level with my face, close enough that spray spattered my glasses, and it regarded me with one pale eye for a long time. Then it sank without a sound, leaving the pilchards bobbing on the swell.
This morning the Mhairi was sitting high and dry on her mooring, and the tin was empty. I have decided to believe it was the seals.
