Keyblade tattoo on the ribs

Ribs · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a crossed pair of ornate keyblades, one with a star-shaped emblem and crown-like filigree above, set against a heart-like outline. Bold black outlines define the blades, with yellow, teal and green accents filling the hilts and guards. The design runs vertically along the side of the ribs and is shown against plain skin with a grey top at the upper edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gate at Harrow Col had been shut since my grandmother's time, and the wind off the scree had worn its hinges to threads. Nobody in the valley would touch it. My father made the lock, he said, and only two keys could open it, one for the living side and one for the side the snow claims. He had lost both before I was born, or so the village told me.

I found the first key in a tin under the forge floor, its bow cut as a five-pointed star with a crown of iron filigree above it, wrapped in oilcloth that smelled of pine tar. The second hung in the chapel vestry on a nail, its hilt stained teal with age and a green cross at the end of its shaft. Laid side by side on the altar step, their shafts crossed like a saltire, and the gap between the two bows made the shape of a heart.

Past midnight I climbed to the col with a lantern and both keys on my belt. Drift had buried the lintel, and the gate sang in the wind as I pushed the star-key into the lock. Nothing happened. Then I turned the teal one the other way, and the iron frame let out a sigh like a bellows and swung inward on a valley I had never seen from above.

On the far side the pass was green with spring. A boy stood among the goats, holding a third key I had not known existed. He looked at my belt, then at my face, and asked whether I had brought the other half of him. I said I had. We never settled what he meant, but I have kept the keys on the same cord ever since.
