Knit until death banner over yarn ball
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A purple ball of yarn with a wooden knitting needle runs through the centre of the design, wrapped by a banner with the words KNIT UNTIL DEATH. Green leaves sit on either side, and the banner ends are shaded in red. Bold outlines and solid colour fills dominate, set against plain skin with a blue background at the right edge.

The wool in Ashwell Vale had to be gathered from the brambles, since the Lord of Harrowmere had forbidden shearing on the grounds that a sheep idle in winter was a sheep that might lie down and think. So every autumn the women walked the hedgerows with baskets, and Hester Crane, who had walked them for sixty years, came home each night with her fingers red from thorns and a fresh ball of violet wool under her arm. She wound it tight on a cedar needle her father had carved, and she told the ball, as she did every evening, that it would outlast her.

The Lord's steward came up the lane in the third week of frost with a ledger and a decree. Every household, it said, must knit without pause until death, so that no hand in the kingdom would ever lie idle. Hester read it twice on her doorstep, then asked him to wait while she finished a row. He waited a day, then another, watching her needles click through the grey dusk. On the third morning he reached for the ball. She laughed and told him the decree said nothing about the pace.
She knit for eleven more winters, slowly and with great care, and the steward grew old checking his ledger against her progress. Then one morning the lane was quiet, and the cedar needle stood upright in the ball with the wool wrapped round it in a red-ended banner that read KNIT UNTIL DEATH in her own careful stitches. The steward unrolled it down the hill, past the church and the mill, and the banner kept going until it reached the sea.
