Lace garter tattoo on a thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a thigh and hand in dimly lit, moody lighting, with a black lace garter worn above the knee. Below it, a tattoo of a lace-patterned band wraps around the leg, with a dark vertical line running down toward the knee. The image is mostly black and grey, with warm skin tones and soft shadows around the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Her mother's pattern book was never meant to leave the house in Ruddington, but it went with the bobbins when the lace trade shut its last frames, and by the spring Nell was the only one in the row still pricking card at the kitchen table. The book was full of old diagrams in brown ink, each one a band of mesh or a scallop, numbered in a hand that leaned backwards. Page nineteen had no name, only a drawing of a band that narrowed to a point and ran down like a plumb line.

Nell worked it for three weeks before she understood the joke. The point was not a mistake. It was a pin marking where the band should be cut and tied, so that a length of lace could be fastened round something and stay put. Her mother had known that. Her grandmother had written the number beside it: 14 pairs, one for the pin.
The customer who came for it was a stranger from Derby with a tin of coins and no patience. She wanted the band exactly as drawn, down to the bobbin count, and she did not ask where the pattern had come from. Nell gave her the strip wrapped in tissue. It was the last thing she made on the old pillow before the frame went to the dealer.
On the walk home she counted the stitches in her head and found the number was right, which pleased her more than she expected. Her mother had always said a pattern was only a promise that someone would come back for it.
