The bolt struck the clock tower at twenty past one. Nobody saw it hit, only the flash that turned every puddle white, and then the smell of hot copper drifting down Church Street. The clock stopped at a quarter to two and never started again. Traders stood in the rain staring up at it, and an old man from the fishmongers said the tower had been waiting a hundred years to be asked the time.
Nell went up the back stairs that evening with a lamp and a tin of pale ink she'd bought for lettering price tags. In the tower room the mechanism lay open like a split fish, gears furred with rust, and on the floor was a scorched scrap of brass, curled into a shape like a jagged stroke. She traced it with her finger. It was warm. She wrapped it in her scarf, went back down through the rain, and by morning every scroll she could imagine was spiralling out across the glass of her stall, waiting for the power to come back on.
