Lily with swirls on the side

Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A large magenta and purple lily with yellow stamens sits at the centre of the design, with two yellow-green leaves extending to the left and lower left. Black scrolling swirls wrap around the flower and sweep up towards the top of the frame and down to the bottom right. The petals use smooth shading and highlights to show form, while the swirls are bold, solid black lines on pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had got into the turnips by the second week of December, and Aggie Pell said the ground would not give up a single green thing before March. So when her brother came in from the top field with snow on his cap and a lily in his fist, nobody in the kitchen believed him. The stem was snapped clean. The petals were the colour of plums held up to a lamp, and the stamens dusted gold across the flagstones every time the door swung.

They put it in the blue jug on the windowsill, and it did not wilt. Its leaves were yellow-green at the tips, as if dipped in butter, and black tendrils curled off the stem the way the wind writes on a wet slate. Each morning there were new frost-scrolls on the inside of the glass, running from the sill towards the door, and each morning the lily had opened a little further, as though it had somewhere to be.

Gideon Marsh from the next farm came over to look at it and sat a long while without speaking. Then he told them that a lily in winter is a debt, and the ground always collects. Aggie took the lantern that night and followed the scrolls on the glass out into the dark, past the byre, along the old drove road to the stone wall where nothing had ever grown.

Behind a loose stone she found a tin box, rusted at the hinges, full of bulbs wrapped in brown paper. Each paper had a name in her grandmother's hand. Aggie planted the lot in the hard earth by lantern light, and told the wall it would have its dues. In March the drove road was green from end to end. The lily in the jug had gone to paper, but when she touched a petal it was still warm.
