Lion head with lotus flowers sketch

Botanical · Colour · Flash

A pen drawing of a lion's head in profile, with its mane flowing into loose strands and sprigs. Lotus blooms sit above the head and below it, with smaller flowers, buds and stems filling the spaces around the face. The fine hatching and soft shading are done in blue-violet ink on cream paper, with the composition arranged to fit a body placement.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lion came down to the reed pool each evening, and each evening the lotuses opened a little wider to meet him, as if they had been waiting since morning. Old Harun, who kept the irrigation channels for the village of Sennet, had watched this for thirty summers and still could not decide whether the flowers were grateful or simply foolish.

One dry year the channel silted and the river would not reach the lower fields. Harun's granddaughter, Ruth Maro, who was nine and stubborn, walked up past the last palms with a clay jar on her hip and a loaf wrapped in linen. She found the lion lying in the shallows with his chin on the mud, his mane tangled with blossoms that had dropped from the pool. He did not rise. He only looked at her with eyes that had given up on hunting.

She set down the jar. Then she did what her grandfather had never dared and knelt beside him, pulling the sticky petals from his mane one by one and laying them on the water until the pool was crowded with white and rose-coloured cups. The lion sighed, and the stems began to drink. Where they drank, the mud darkened and held, and a thread of cold water crept from the rock below the reeds toward the dry fields.

By morning the lion had gone, and the channel ran clear as far as the lower terraces. Harun found Ruth asleep against the jar with a single lotus bud tucked behind her ear, its seed head pressed flat and dark like a closed eye. He never again asked whether the flowers were foolish. He only took the path past the palms each evening and left the jar full at the water's edge.
