Lotus flower pencil design

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of a lotus flower, with layered pointed petals drawn in outline and symmetrical about a central vertical axis. Fine stippled dots and short hatched marks decorate the inner petals, and a column of small dots runs above and below the bloom. The sketch is in grey graphite on a pale background and is centred on the page.

You are the only one in the bakery at half four, and the dough has already decided what kind of morning it will be. Rain ticks against the skylight. Flour lies across the steel table like frost, and the proving drawer hums its low note while the loaves swell under their cloths, one after another, pale as sleeping heads.

Your mother's rule was that bread tells you when it is ready if you stop talking long enough to listen. So you stop. You press a knuckle into the centre of a tray of brioche and watch the dent slowly fill back. Outside, the lane is still black. A van idles at the kerb with its headlamps on, and the driver, who buys one seeded plait every Tuesday and never once says thank you, leaves his engine running.

You shape the last batch of rolls into tight spirals, the way she did, layering each one so the middle folds in on itself. You slide the tray into the oven and the glass door fogs over. For twelve minutes nothing in the room is anything but warm and rising, and you let it be.

When you pull them out, the crusts have split in neat lines, each roll opening outward from its own centre like a flower that has only just decided to be one. The sky over the car park has gone the colour of weak tea. The van has gone too. You set the tray on the sill to cool and, for once, do not sweep up the crumbs.
