Made in Oregon script in a state outline on forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A forearm shows the words Made in Oregon in green script lettering, set inside a black linework outline of the state of Oregon. The letters have a dark green outline with a lighter green fill, and the state shape is drawn in a clean, even black line. A dark background and a black garment with a white logo sit to the right of the arm.

Dear Marguerite, the sign-maker in Hood River swore on his mother that the green paint would hold through a wet winter, and I believed him because he had a moustache like a shelf and looked like a man who had never lied about paint. So I am writing this from a bus shelter in Astoria with the rain going sideways, to tell you the good news first: the van is still running. The bad news is that I left the spare tyre in Tillamook and I have been eating crisps from a machine that sells nothing else.

You asked why I was driving the coast road in February, and I never gave you a straight answer. Here is one. Dad drove us out to the Gorge every summer in a Ford with a cracked dashboard, and at the state line he would always say the same thing, which was that Oregon makes you honest about the weather. I thought it was a joke until last Tuesday, when a woman at the petrol station in Seaside asked where I was from and I said Leeds, and then, without thinking, I said I was just passing through, and she said, love, you say it like you're trying to get out of a bad marriage. I laughed so hard I nearly dropped the nozzle.

The bus is late, but the sea is doing something impressive out past the breakwater, all grey lumps and white spit. I will be home on Sunday if the ferry lets me. Tell Mum the lettering on my arm is holding up fine and that the lad who did it asked me three times whether I was sure about the outline. I was sure. Some places you only get to say you belong to once, and I wanted it written down in ink where I could read it while I drive.
