Mandala and feathers on hand and wrist

Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A bold black ink design covers the wrist and back of the hand. A large mandala with a crescent-shaped centre and layered petal and floral motifs sits on the wrist, while stippled dotwork feathers spread over the back of the hand and fingers. The linework is fine and clean, with shading built from dots and solid black areas. The hand rests flat on a plain white surface, with a black sleeve at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You climb the iron stairs on the last night of October with the tide already turning beneath the rock, and the lamp is cold because the wick has been wrong since August. Your sister's letter sits unopened in your coat pocket. On the rail outside, the gulls are huddled together like wet washing.

The keeper before you, Idris Wane, kept the light for thirty-one years and left behind a tin of brass pins, a logbook with coffee rings on every page, and a drawer of drawings on squared paper. Most are of the moon. One shows a thin crescent cupped in a ring of petals, each layer drawn with a finer nib than the last, and in the margin he has written, in pencil, Dots take longer than you think. You spend the afternoon trimming the wick to the exact width he noted and wondering what he meant by it.

The storm arrives at dusk and a gull hits the glass with a sound like a dropped plate. In the morning you find its feathers pressed against the lens, grey and barred with black, and you pick them free one at a time with the tweezers, the way Idris must have done. Each one takes longer than you expect.

When the cloud tears open, the moon hangs low and thin over the water. You light the lamp and the beam swings out across the swell. In the logbook you write: Wick trimmed. Feathers returned to the sea. Moon low, and the light is steady.
