Black dotwork mandala shaped as a turtle, with pink, green and yellow watercolour splashes, tattooed on a forearm.

Mandala turtle on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A turtle is formed from a dense black mandala pattern, with its shell, head and flippers built from radiating rings, scalloped petals and fine stippled dots. Soft pink, green and yellow washes spread outward from the design, giving a watercolour effect over the black linework. The tattoo is centred on the forearm against a tiled floor and a person in shorts in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Grandad never let me near the ink pots until I could draw a circle that closed. He said a mandala was a map of getting home, so every ring had to meet its own beginning. I was nine the summer the turtles came up the beach at Carrack Cove, four of them in a single night, and I was the one sent down with a bucket of seawater and a tin of paints that smelled of cloves.

The first was a hen-sized loggerhead with barnacles on her flippers, digging as if the dunes had insulted her. Grandad sat cross-legged on a tarpaulin and sketched her shell as a rosette of petals, dot by dot, while the tide crept up to test the edge of his drawing. He washed it in pale pink, then green where the light fell through the shallows, and told me the colours were only there to make the lines easier to forgive.

By dawn the sea had taken the paper and the sand around it, and the turtle had gone out past the breakers, her pattern drowned in the grey swell. I wanted to cry about it. Grandad only tapped the tin and pointed at the wet rocks, where a splash of yellow had bled into the weed and left a perfect little ring behind.

Years later I still paint them the same way: start at the centre, leave a dot of colour where the heart should be, and let the edges run wherever the water takes them. I never try to take a ring back from the sea. I just make sure the last one closes.
