Maple leaf landscape on upper back
Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo
A maple leaf outline is filled with a scene of bare, branching trees and dark shapes in silhouette, set against a glowing yellow and orange sky. The linework is soft and the shading blends from black into warm yellows and oranges, with the leaf's veins drawn as pale lines through the scene. The leaf sits centrally on the upper back near the shoulder blade, with the skin and background kept simple.

The lamp had gone dark again, and Mairi Dunne climbed the seventy-two steps of Gannet Head with a tin of paraffin under one arm and her father's spectacles in her apron pocket. He had left them on the rail at supper, as he always did, and without them he could not read the tide book or tell a buoy from a gull.

The wind came up the cliff smelling of salt and of the maple wood behind the light. Every autumn the trees turned all at once, red at the edges and gold in the middle, and the leaves blew through the lantern room and stuck to the glass. Mairi wiped the panes with her sleeve. Through the clean patch she saw the whole headland turned upside down, black branches stretched across a sky the colour of a burnt yolk, and out beyond the reef a small boat with no lamp at all, rocking where the charts showed nothing but deep water.
She filled the reservoir, trimmed the wick until the flame stood straight, and turned the lens by hand because the clockwork had seized in the damp. The beam swept out over the water, then across the trees, then over the water again. The boat's oars came up and dipped, steady, towards the notch in the rocks where the cove was.
Her father found the spectacles on the sill the next morning, with one maple leaf pressed flat beneath them, its veins pale against the rust. He held it up to the window and said nothing, which was how she knew he had seen the same thing she had, the bare trees standing in the lamp's light and turning the whole sky gold.
