The lenses are heart-shaped, which I still think is an outrageous thing to put on a pair of spectacles. Through them the harbour turns a shade of pink that no sensible sea should wear, and the gulls look like guests who have come to a wedding and forgotten the gift. I bought a second pair from Dunmere's stall on Friday for a pound, the wire a bit bent, the lenses a little scratched. I want you to take them across with you so that when you look back at the headland you will see what I see, though it will be pink and foolish and mostly my fault.

I have put them in the envelope with this letter, folded inside a sock so they do not rattle. Do not wear them in the rain, because the hearts fog up and you will walk into the bollards. Write when you land. If the ferry is late, look for the lighthouse, and if I am on the sea wall with my own pair pushed up on my head, wave, because I will be pretending I was not waiting.
