Mermaid with flowing hair line drawing

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A mermaid sits upright with one arm raised behind her head, her eyes closed and long hair swirling around her body and into the water. Her scaled fish tail curls down and out to the lower edge of the frame, with a small fish drawn near her chest and a few bubbles floating in the background. The design uses fine, sketchy black linework with cross-hatched shading on the tail and no colour fill.

You have stamped four hundred passports this winter and none of them came up out of the harbour. At quarter past two the light on the breakwater flickers, and a woman is hauling herself onto the bottom rung of the ladder, hair spread over the wet concrete like kelp, her tail slapping once, twice, then going still. She has no passport. She has a small silver fish on a cord around her neck, and she holds it out to you as if it were a ticket.

Procedure says to call the duty sergeant. You do not. You ask where she is travelling from, and she points at the water with her chin, then at the far lights of the other coast, and says the name of a village you know only from a faded poster in the terminal. Her eyes stay closed most of the time, as though the lamp hurts them. You find the grey blanket with the reflective strip in the locker, and she lets you wrap it round her shoulders, though it cannot cover the scales.

Near dawn she asks whether a fish is still a fish if nobody inspects it. You say you do not know, which is the truth. She tells you the crossing takes the length of one tide, and that the sea keeps no records but remembers who held the door. Bubbles lift off the harbour in a slow line, one after another, as if someone out there were counting.

At six the shift changes. You open the hut and the water lies flat and grey. You stamp the back of your own hand with the blue ink, since it is the only paper you have, and when you look up the step is empty except for a single strand of hair caught on the rail, shining like a fine line of pen work.
