A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had sealed the Ferrier's Rest for six days, and Mabel Crane had run out of things to say to the drovers. On the seventh morning she took the pot of teal paint and the fine brush her father had used for lettering ship's boards, and she climbed the ladder to the sign above the door. The wind came off the moor with a cutting edge, and her fingers stiffened around the brush before she had finished the first curl of hair.

She painted the mermaid the way she remembered the harbour wall at Scarrow, with the hair coming down in dark loops and one arm lifted to shade her eyes. The tail she laid in overlapping scales, then softened the shadows with lilac where the imagined sun would have fallen. A pink starfish she pressed in last, because her father had always said a sign needed one small thing that did not belong. By noon the drovers had gathered in the yard below, arguing about whether a mermaid could swim uphill.

The boy from the stables asked if she was real. Mabel told him she was as real as the road, which was currently under four feet of white, and he seemed to accept this as a fair answer. Her paint kept running in the damp, so she wiped the lower edge with her sleeve and let the colour settle where it wanted to go.

On the eighth morning a plough cut through the drift at the bottom of the lane, and the carts began to move again. Mabel stood at the window with a cup going cold in her hands. Beneath the sign, a single flake of teal had come away and lay on the snow, bright as a scale, and nobody had noticed it but her.
