Moon phases down the spine

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A vertical column of circular black moon phases runs along the spine, with each circle shaded to show a different phase from full to new. The linework is clean and the solid black fills contrast sharply with the skin. The tattoo sits centred on a bare back, with dark hair falling over the left shoulder and soft, neutral light in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The big top had gone soft in the middle by the time Mabel Pryce carried the ledger out to the last stake. Her father had kept it for forty years, and before him his father, a book of thirty-page columns, each night ruled into a small black circle. The old people in the company said the moon had made a bargain with Abel Gorse when he first pitched canvas on the common at Thrale. The moon would keep the crowds coming so long as the show drew a circle for every night it was watched, and a circle shaded for how much of the moon the people had seen.

For a long while the ledger filled quickly. Full moons were heavy with farmers and their children, and the clowns sold toffee apples until the sugar ran out. Mabel shaded the circles dark and the bargain held. Then the rail lines came, and the factory towns had their own pictures to watch, and the crowds thinned to a few boys on the hedge and a dog that followed the elephant. She still painted the circles each evening, though the paint was cheap and the light in the wagon was poor.

The last shading was done on a night with no moon at all. Mabel sat with the book open on her knee and the lamp turned low, and she found she had no wish to fill the circle black or grey. She left it empty and white, the way the new moon looks from the field before anyone thinks to look up.

In the morning the company folded the canvas and loaded the horses. Mabel walked the empty field alone with the ledger under her arm, and she left it open on the stake where the ringmaster would find it. Above the hedge the moon was thin again, waxing toward nothing it could be paid for.
