Multi-faced figure and tree on forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A stylised nude figure with three stacked faces, orange hair and small red dots on the cheeks is outlined in black across the forearm. To the right, a dark purple and black tree is shaded with soft, spattered edges, and a small green bird sits near the wrist. The black linework is clean and the colour is limited to orange, pink, purple and green accents on a pale skin tone.

Dear Ray,

The Majestic has reopened with a new floor and a band that plays the same three waltzes. Mags Tully sells the raffle tickets from a card table by the doors, and she is the one I want you to picture. She has three faces stacked one above the other. She keeps the top one for the cloakroom, the middle for the men with money, and the bottom for the lads who've had too much stout. The orange hair is her own doing, dyed with a packet from the chemist on Harrow Street.

The tree outside the long window is the old sycamore they were going to fell in March. Ma wrote that the council had changed its mind, which I think is down to Mags, who sent a letter in purple ink to every councillor in the borough. It ran to three pages and was signed in three different hands. Nobody argued with that. A little green bird comes to the sill every evening, the same one each time, waiting for crumbs from the chip shop across the road.

Last Saturday she asked me to dance. I said I had two left feet. She laughed with all three mouths at once, which sounds awful written down but was lovely, and then she said the trick is to let one face lead and the other two follow. I've been practising in the kitchen with the wireless on. Dad says I'm turning into a whirling dervish.

Come home at Easter if you can. Bring the good tin of shortbread and tell Pearl her bird is safe. Mags says the tree knows the way back to the pier.

Your loving sister, Nell
