Musical staff and treble clef on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows wavy five-line staves carrying musical notes, with a large treble clef near the lower left and notes scattered along the lines. The linework is thin and dark, while soft pink, teal and blue watercolour-style washes spread behind and around the design. The composition wraps diagonally across the side of the torso above the waistband of dark jeans, against a colourful painted wall.

Dear Tom, The pass closed on Tuesday, and the Fellside Inn has taken me in with the rest of the stranded: two drovers, a bishop's widow, and a piano nobody has tuned since the old king. I have spent three days on the upright in the back parlour with a tuning fork, a rag and a wedge, and my fingers are raw enough to make a stranger wince.

Under the lid I found a bundle of music sheets tied with string. The staves run in long wavy lines, like the ribbons the wind leaves across snow, and the notes have been dropped along them as if someone shook them out of a bag. The clef is drawn large in one corner, curled like a question. Someone had spilt tea across the page, and the ink went soft at the edges, blue bleeding into grey, with a pink bloom where the sugar sat.

Last night I played it through. The melody climbs, stalls, then falls back where the blot is, and I could not read the bars under the stain, so I made up what I thought they wanted. Mrs Hale, who had not spoken since Carlisle, came in from the hall in her stockings and sang the missing line in a voice like cracked glass. We did not know each other's names until then.

The drovers have gone out to dig the lane. I am keeping the sheet. When the thaw comes I will take it down to the valley and find out whose hand it was. Your loving sister, Nell.
