Nautical flash sheet with anchor, lighthouse and octopus
Traditional · Mixed · Flash
Five tattoo design sketches are laid out on tracing paper against a light background, each with a nautical theme. The motifs include a lighthouse in a bubble, an octopus wearing a sailor cap, a stag skull with antlers framing a sailing ship, a paper boat, and an anchor with a blue fill. The drawings use bold black linework with light hatching and small dots, and the anchor is the only element shown in colour.

You reach the cairn at Scarrow Pass an hour after the mist has swallowed the path behind you, and the old guide, Mairi Tolly, does not look up from her knots. "The stag comes down at dusk," she says. "Don't follow it. Everyone who has followed it has ended up at sea."

You don't believe her until the light goes flat and grey and the stag steps out of the rock below the snowline. Its antlers spread as wide as a rigging, and caught between the tines, where a cradle of branches ought to be, sits a three-masted ship with its sails furled like wet paper. Water runs off the antlers in beads and falls upward, catching the last of the light in small silver bubbles that burst against the mist.
Mairi presses a brass lamp into your hands, its glass shaped like a lighthouse, and a coil of rope over your shoulder. "The ship always wants a lighthouse," she says. "Then the octopus, then the paper boat. The sailor will tell you where the anchor goes." You laugh, and she doesn't. Something cold coils round your boot, and a tentacle the colour of slate lifts out of the heather, a little cap tipped jauntily on its end.
You climb down the far side with the lamp swinging at your belt. The stag turns its great head to watch you go, as if counting. Below, the valley has filled with black water, and the ship is already sailing across it, its sails catching a wind that does not touch the pass. You light the lamp, because the stag is still looking, and because you have finally understood that the ship has been waiting for someone to show it the way home.
