Nautilus shell with watercolour wash
Other · Colour · Photo
A nautilus shell with a fibonacci-style spiral and fine radiating segments is drawn in black linework. The shell is filled with loose blue, green and purple washes that blend into pale skin, with a few small dots of ink around the edges. The shell is centred on the photograph against a soft, close-up view of the skin.

The man from Penzance wanted the shell cleaned up for his shop window, not kept as it was, so Morwenna put the kettle on and named her price first. He laughed. She didn't. Her father had brought the nautilus home from a trawler's net in the winter the harbour froze, and it had sat on the dresser ever since, its chambers showing like the rings of a cut tree.

She told him what her father had told her. The animal lives only in the last room, the front one and the biggest. Behind it the older rooms are empty, filled with gas and seawater in measured amounts, so the shell can rise and sink without any effort. Every room is a sum of what it once carried. The man said that sounded like a parable. She said it sounded like a boat.
When the frost came in January she carried the shell down to the slipway at low tide, where the water lay still, blue going to green going to violet wherever the sun touched it. She dropped it in. It turned slowly, showing her the spiral, then tipped and held and went under without a sound, except for one bubble that rose from the last chamber before she could no longer see it.
The man paid for the cleaning and never came back, and she kept the money. In March she found the shell on the front step, rinsed clean by rain and scrubbed pale by the tide, with a fleck of blue still caught in its lip. She set it back on the dresser beside the kettle and told nobody it had come home on its own.
