Ninja and pagoda shoulder piece with kanji

Japanese · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two grey shaded ninja figures, one in a crouching attack pose with a sword and one raised with a blade, set against a red swirling arc and red ink splashes. Black and grey kanji characters and a red kanji sit above, beside a shaded pagoda on a dark background. Soft grey shading and bold black outlines contrast with the vivid red accents across the upper arm and shoulder.

The bell at Komyō temple had not rung since the red rain, and Ren, the caretaker's boy, believed the silence was his doing. He had carried the message up the mountain path himself, folded inside a rice cake, the way the old men had taught him, and the shadow who received it only nodded and vanished into the cedars before Ren could ask a single question.

Three nights later the shadow came back down. His grey clothes were torn and smelled of smoke, and across one forearm ran a line of red that Ren at first took for paint. The man said nothing about the lord's men on the far ridge, nothing about the pagoda that had burned on the valley road. He asked only for water and a whetstone, and he sat on the temple step working his blade while the bell rope swayed above him.

Ren asked why the bell stayed silent. The shadow said a bell announces where a man stands, and a man who wishes to live should never stand anywhere for long. He wiped the blade and held it up to the moon until the edge looked as thin as a wheat stalk. "Let them listen to the wind," he said. "It is the only honest messenger."

Before dawn he was gone, and the valley had gone quiet, the pagoda roof a black shape against the paling sky. Ren climbed down to the stream and found a single red petal turning on the water, too bright for any blossom that season. He let it go, and when the bell finally rang that morning, it rang for no one at all.
