Norse magical staves and symbols chart
Colour · Flash
The image is a chart of fourteen red Norse symbols drawn on a white background, arranged in a grid with a short English label under each one. The symbols are built from clean, uniform lines, with some geometric designs such as an eight-armed compass and others resembling runes, arrows and branching shapes. The chart is a single flat colour with no shading and no people or skin shown.

Brother, the roof of the north hall came down in the storm the night after you sailed, and Father has given up his bed. He sleeps on the flagstones by the hearth now with a slate under his cheek, and the slate has the sleep-thorn scratched on it in red ochre, the way Grandmother showed me. I told him the thorn only works if the hand that cut it means it. He laughed and said the sea had taught him to mean things quickly.

I have been copying the old marks off the chapel wall since the frost came. There is the one with eight arms that Hild says is the wayfinder, the one you carved on the mast-step of the Gull so you would never be lost in fog. There is the mark for courage in a fight, and the one that makes an enemy's heart go to water. I kept my hand steady for those. The lock-breaker I left alone. The bailiff's men came up the valley road on Tuesday asking after the Thorvald cattle, and I did not want anyone thinking we kept such things in the house.
Last night the gaoler's boy came to the gate with a split lip and asked whether any of the marks could help a man locked in the undercroft. I told him no. Then I fetched the chalk and drew the peace-stave on the inside of his wrist, because he was shaking so badly he could not hold the lantern, and it cost nothing. I do not know if it works. I know he stopped shaking.
Come home before the thaw. You know the wayfinding mark better than any of us, so use it. The wall is cracked where the stone fell, and I would rather read your letters than copy anything else off it.
