Octopus tattoo across the chest
Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A large octopus with curling tentacles and a detailed head sits across the upper chest and sternum. The design is built from fine linework and dense stippled dotwork shading, which gives the body and tentacles their texture. The image is shown in black and grey, with the subject centred and cropped at the neck and below the bra line.

The summer the rain stopped, old Jannet Wray carried her bucket down to the cistern behind the kitchen garden and found something sitting on the lid that had no business being there. It was an octopus, the size of a cartwheel and grey as wet slate, and it was counting the pebbles on the path with one curling arm.

"Where have you come from?" she asked. The sea, it told her, though it did not use its mouth to say so. It had followed a storm up the river and down the drain, and it was tired of salt and tired of being looked at by gulls. It wanted somewhere quiet to rest its eight thoughts. Jannet said the cistern was for watering beans, not for lodgers. Then she saw how its skin had gone pale and patchy from the long journey, and she fetched the jar of soot ink and her grandmother's bone needle.
Every evening after that she sat on the step with the lamp and dotted the creature's mantle, one tiny point at a time, the way her grandmother had dotted the family's Sunday cloth. Dot by dot the pale skin darkened and filled, and the octopus grew steadier, its eyes going from milk to a shining black. It told her things as she worked. It knew where the lost anchors of the harbour lay, and which fish could be trusted with a secret, and that the moon pulled at the garden wall more than anyone admitted.
On the last night the jar was nearly dry. Jannet made one final dot on the very top of the head and sat back, her wrist aching. The octopus unfolded itself slowly, lifted one arm to the lamplight, and then slid over the cistern lip and away down the drain toward the river. In the morning there was a single bean standing at the end of the path, its leaves dark as ink, and the cistern water was clean and cold for the first time in years.
