Ornamental full back tattoo

Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind, showing a large back tattoo of symmetrical ornamental patterns with lotus-like flowers and scrolling linework. The design is rendered in solid black ink with fine and bold lines and some stippled areas, and it fills the back from the shoulders to the waist. The black and white photo sits against shelves of ink bottles and a pale studio wall, with a partial tattoo visible on the left forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tomas had been told that the ceiling of the chapter house at Saint Ilse held nine hundred lotuses, and that no two were alike. He counted them on his third morning with a knotted cord and a stick of charcoal, climbing the scaffold while the old mason below pretended not to watch. Each rosette opened from a centre point like a held breath, every petal answering the one across from it.

Brother Anselm had gone blind the winter before, but he still knew the ceiling by touch. He would lie on the flagstones with his palms flat, tracing the grout lines, and call out corrections. 'Your fourth scroll drifts left,' he said on the sixth day. 'Nothing drifts in God's arithmetic.' Tomas measured again, found the scroll exact, and told him so, and Anselm laughed until he coughed.

On the last evening Tomas copied the whole design onto a sheet of linen and pinned it to the refectory table. Every line he had drawn was mirrored, and the mirror was the only honest thing in the room. Anselm asked him to lay the sheet on the floor and read it aloud. Tomas named the petals one by one, then the gaps between them, then the small unpainted circle at the very centre where the eye of each flower should be.

'Leave that one empty,' said Anselm. 'Whoever looks up will fill it with what they brought in.' Tomas rolled the linen under his arm and walked down to the harbour, where the fishing boats were coming in with their nets hung over the rails to dry, the mesh catching the last light in the same knots and rings.
