Ornamental mandala band on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm is wrapped in a band of symmetrical ornamental design built from geometric panels, scalloped petal shapes and small star-like motifs. The linework is fine and dark, with dotted shading in places that gives the pattern depth. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against a dark surface, and the design runs across most of the visible forearm.

The mosaic was already wrong when Queen Ysolde's steward brought me the cracked star from the east cloister, and I said so before he had finished bowing. Forty years of laying tile in the palace of Corvane had taught me that a pattern does not break by accident. Someone had lifted a single piece and set it back a quarter turn, and the whole band of petals had begun to lean.

I spent three nights on my knees with a pot of lime putty and a dish of dark glaze, copying the border from the old drawings in the archive. The drawings were made by a woman called Idra Malk, who signed each sheet with a small eight-pointed star and never once set foot in the palace. Her panels were laid out like a forearm wound with cord: a diamond at the centre, lotus scallops rolling away on either side, and dots of shadow pressed in where the light would fall. I knew the dots were meant for dusk. The lamplighters in Corvane had always lit the east cloister last.
On the third night a boy from the kitchens came to watch and asked why the stars were all different. I told him the stars were names. Each one marked a cistern, a bell, a child born under that wall. Then I found the seventh star, the one that had been turned, and beneath its glaze was a small hollow where someone had hidden a key no longer than my little finger.
I did not open the cistern that night. I set the tile back square, pressed the putty flat with my thumb, and let the dusk come in through the cloister windows across the petals, so that for a moment the whole band looked as though it were turning slowly on the floor.
