Ornate dragonfly design with geometric circle
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A dragonfly is drawn in the centre with symmetrical wings filled with intricate, mandala-like patterns of loops, scallops and dots. Behind it sits a partial dotted circle with small dangling drop shapes beneath, all in black ink on a plain white background. The composition is centred and symmetrical, with clean outlines and fine repeated detail throughout.

At the Michaelmas fair in Lowther Dale, the ring-toss woman Agnes Coll kept a dragonfly in a jam jar on her counter. It was a poor season for prizes. The children threw their rings and won nothing, yet they kept coming back, because the dragonfly turned in the lamplight like something cut from a window.

Her brother Dunstan told her to let it go. Dragonflies lived a summer and died in the reeds, he said, and a fair was no place for them. Agnes said the thing had come to her tent on the first night and had not left, which a fair took as a sign and a farmer took as bad luck. She fed it gnats from the lamp ring with a pin and told no one what she wished for.
On the last night the wind went round to the north and the field frosted white. Dunstan came out with the jar and found the flap open. Agnes stood on the grass beneath the carousel lamps, and the dragonfly sat on her wrist with its wings spread like lace. Dew gathered on its tail and hung there in small drops, like the drops on a plumb-line under a dotted circle. She said it was time. Dunstan unscrewed the lid. She breathed on the wings, and the dragonfly lifted and went up into the dark. Its drops did not fall but stayed where they were, and by morning every rope and guy-line on the fair was beaded with ice, and no one could say where it had come from.
