Ornate key wrapped in lettered ribbons on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large key with filigree scrollwork at the bow and a heart-shaped detail along the shaft is wrapped by three ribbon banners. The banners carry script lettering in black outline, and the ribbons are shaded with soft grey gradients. The design is set against pale skin and is shown in a close, straight-on photograph of the forearm.

Hold the torch steady, lad, or we'll both end up in the boiler room with the mice. Put your hand on the rail and mind the cracked tile. Aye, that's it. Now listen, because I'll only tell this once, and the lift takes its time at three in the morning.

Nineteen sixty-one, the winter the generators died. Ward C went black from the end bed to the swing doors, and I was twenty-two and frightened of the dark like any sensible man. Sister Hollis pressed the vestry key into my palm, the big iron one with the fancy bow and the little heart cut down the shaft, and said, 'Sometimes it's worse before it gets better, Albert. The darkness gets bigger first. That's how you know it's working.' I didn't understand her. I thought she meant the patients. She meant the lamps.
I walked those corridors with that key in one fist and a hurricane lamp in the other, counting doors by touch. Every time the black seemed to swallow the lamplight, I turned the key over and felt the heart under my thumb and remembered what she'd said. By dawn the porters were back with candles, the wards were lit again, and I'd gone from boy to man somewhere between the linen store and the fourth floor.
The vestry door was replaced years ago, so this key opens nothing now. I keep it on a length of ribbon in my coat pocket, and I take it out on nights like this. Mind the step. There's the ward. Count your breaths and look down the far end, there's a light on, same as always.
