Ornate spine and swirl back tattoo

Back · Black and grey · Photo

The design runs down the centre of the back as a vertical column of ornate, diamond-shaped motifs linked by fine lines, with a large curling swirl sweeping across each side of the upper and lower back. The linework is fine and uniform, with dotted and patterned fills inside the motifs. The photograph is sepia-toned, so the ink reads as a single dark brown tone, and the composition frames the whole back from the shoulders to the waistband.

Well now, you'll want to sit closer, because the wind off the Channel gets into the boarding house by the back stairs and I'll not repeat myself over it. Mrs Vennor kept the Gull's Rest on Carrick Parade for forty years, and the thing everybody remembers about her is the brass key ring she wore on a cord round her neck, nineteen keys, every one for a room that had a lock that worked. She could find the right one in the dark. That was her trade, you see. Knowing which door belonged to which story.

There was a lodger one October, a cartographer by way of Edinburgh, who came with a tin trunk and a stack of charts he would not let the maid touch. He spent his evenings drawing a spiral on the back of his own sheets, always starting at the centre and always winding out, and when Mrs Vennor asked him what it was for, he said it was the shape the sea makes when it has forgotten where the shore is. She thought that a great deal of nonsense. But she gave him the room at the top of the stairs, the one with the window that faces the lighthouse, because a man who draws curls is a man who wants to see a light turn.

He left in November without paying the last week, and the trunk stayed behind. Inside was a single sheet, folded small, with a column of little diamond shapes drawn down it, each one joined to the next by a fine thread of line, like beads on a string that someone had strung and then let fall. Mrs Vennor kept it in the drawer with the keys. Some nights, she said, when the wind came round the point and the stairs began their creaking, she would take it out and trace the chain with one finger, counting the links, waiting for the twentieth one that never came.
