Ouija board across the lower back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A Ouija board design fills the skin of the lower back, with the words YES, OUIJA and NO across the top, the alphabet in two curved rows, the numbers 1 to 0 beneath, and GOOD BYE along the bottom. The letters use a bold, serif-style outline with solid black fill and clean, even linework. The image is black and grey only, with the tattoo centred and fully in frame against a lightly lit background.

The board came down the rubbish chute in a Co-op bag, folded in half, and Dev from fourteen swore it wasn't his. Nobody on the ninth floor owned a board. We all agreed on that in the lift, the way you agree the lift is broken. Then Mrs Pryce on eleven started knocking on her own walls at two in the morning, asking for her husband, and the little glass began moving under her fingers before she had even sat down.

I went up because someone had to tell her to stop. Her kitchen smelled of burnt toast and Dettol. The board lay on the formica between us, the letters arching like a rainbow drawn with a ruler, and the glass sat on YES. She didn't touch it. She said it had been sitting there since Tuesday, and every question she asked went to YES, even whether the lift would ever be mended and whether the bins had been collected.
So I asked it the only thing I could think of. Is anyone there? The glass slid across the board, past the numbers, and stopped on NO. Mrs Pryce laughed until she coughed, and said it was the first honest answer she'd had from anyone in the building. Then she asked whether it wanted us to stop. The glass went to YES, paused, and dragged itself slowly down to GOOD BYE, where it stayed.
I took the board back down eleven floors in the lift, which worked for once, and left it by the chute in its Co-op bag. Somebody would find it and think it was theirs. When I came back up in the morning, the bag had gone, and Mrs Pryce's door was open with the radio playing inside.
