Owl, wolf and rose full sleeve
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
Four views of a full sleeve tattoo are shown side by side. The design includes a large owl perched above red roses with green leaves, a snarling wolf head, and a woman's face with a pearl necklace, set against dark clouds and orange flame shapes. Bold black outlines and flat, solid colour fills in red, green, orange and pink give it a classic bold look, with the dark background shading the composition.

The generator coughs twice before it catches, and by then you have already stopped listening for the ride operator's whistle. Out past the dodgems the dark sits heavy over the field, and the only colour left is the hand-painted board above the fortune booth, where an owl has been keeping watch since your grandmother's day. You were told to sweep the booth and keep out of the way. Instead you stand with the broom while the wind works at the canvas.

Inside, Mrs Adair sits with a tin of pearl buttons and a cracked mirror, counting takings with the patience of someone who has counted worse nights. She does not look up when you ask about the wolf. The wolf, she says, belonged to the strongman's act before the strongman ran off to Hull with the rope girl. It was painted on a board that never got sold, and it came along with the rest of the junk, snarling at everyone who lifted the flap.
Then the flames: a thin orange burst along the tent pole, the paraffin lamp knocked over, and the owl's shadow lurching across the wall as if it has flown down from the painted clouds to see what the fuss is about. You grab the bucket. Mrs Adair grabs the tin, the mirror and, to your surprise, the pearls, laughing as the canvas hisses.
Afterwards, in the grey dawn, the two of you sit on the caravan step with ash on your hands. She tells you the owl always sees the trouble first. You decide the owl had better have a word with the wolf next time.
