Pastel butterfly on upper back
Back · Colour · Photo
A small butterfly sits on the upper back, with pale blue and yellow wings, red spots near the wing edges and a slightly darker body. The shading is soft and the outlines are fine and delicate, giving the design a muted, vintage-illustration feel. The butterfly is centred in the frame against a blurred background, with a floral dress strap at the left edge.

The moth-girl came to Aldbury Fair the week the hop-pickers left, riding in the back of a painted wagon with a cage of pale butterflies that never seemed to land. Her name was Ysolde Penhallow, though the stallholders called her Yellow Sal, and she sold nothing but small wishes for a penny each, written on scraps of paper and pinned inside her lid.

A carter's boy named Tobias Wren came to her on the last evening, holding a coin in a fist gone white at the knuckles. He wanted his mother's cough gone before the frost. Sal took his penny, folded his wish into a square, and asked him to hold out his hand. She shook a single butterfly onto his palm. It was blue at the wings, the colour of a jug left in the rain, with two red dots on each edge like someone had pressed a thumb into wet paint.
"Carry it to the top of the church hill," she said, "and let it go where the wind comes from. Don't look back at the lights."
He ran the whole way up, the butterfly fluttering and then settling on his shoulder as if it had decided to come along. At the top the wind came cold off the marsh. He opened his hand, and the butterfly rose, turned once over the fair, and went down the hill towards the wagon.
By morning his mother was asleep without coughing. The wagon had gone, and nobody in the village could say which road it took, though the cart-ruts ran straight into the mist as if the fields had never been there.
