Peacock feather tattoo on upper back
Realism · Back · Colour · Photo
A peacock feather with a dark blue and orange eye at its base, drawn with soft, flowing strands in green, teal and gold. The feather curves diagonally down the upper back, with fine, feathered linework and gentle shading that give it a painterly, realistic finish. The photograph is taken from behind against a plain light background, with the shoulder and a strap of clothing visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
You found the feather on the lower landing, caught on the iron rail where the stair turns, one long plume the colour of pond water. Nobody had told you peacocks moulted. Your father, who had kept the lamp at Carrick Head for thirty-one years, had never mentioned it either, because nothing on that rock was ever anything but grey, wet or bound for the boats.

You carried it up to the lantern room and held it against the great lens. The dark eye at its base caught the morning and threw a blue ring across the brass. You turned slowly, the way the lamp turned on its clockwork, and the ring went round the glass like a second sun. Below, the Dundee steamer sounded its horn for the bay.
That evening you asked your father whether the light had ever looked at anything the way that feather did. He wiped the lens with a chamois and said the lamp looked at nothing at all; it only showed the rocks where they were. You did not argue. You tucked the feather behind the spare wicks, where the damp could not reach it, and climbed up before dark to wind the weights.
Thirty years later the lamp was automated and the lens went to a museum in Edinburgh. On the last night before the relief crew came, you took the feather down from its nail and let it go into the wind off the headland. It turned once over the white water, showing its eye to the dark, and then the sea had it.
