Pencil drawing of a trailing daisy sprig
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A delicate botanical sketch shows a long, trailing stem with several daisy-like flower heads hanging downwards and feathery, fern-like leaves along the branches. The linework is fine and hand-drawn in graphite or pencil, with soft shading on the petals and seed heads giving them volume. The image is black and grey on an off-white paper background, with the sprig centred and filling the vertical frame.

Sit closer, lad, and mind the candle, for the wax is dear and the fire is dearer. No, don't touch that bundle in the rafters. Those are the daisies Brother Anselm hung up the week before the frost, and they have hung there ever since, heads down, like wet cloaks on a peg.

Sister Maud had the hand for drawing that the bishop's clerks never had. The prior sent her into the infirmary garden to copy the herbs for the great book, and she found a daisy that had seeded itself along the wall where the rain ran off the roof. It trailed down over the stones like a rope let out from a well, and every flower on it bowed as if it were listening to the ground.
She drew it standing on an upturned bucket, with a stub of pencil she was not supposed to own, because the ink would not hold on the calfskin in that damp. Each morning she came back and the sprig had grown a finger's length, so each morning she drew the new bloom beneath the old one. The prior called it vanity to spend good vellum on a weed. Maud said a weed was only a flower nobody had yet asked what it was for.
When the book was bound, the daisies were not in it. Maud had slipped the leaf up her sleeve, and nobody ever found it. Brother Anselm found it in her cell after she was buried, and he hung the cut sprig beside it so that the two would dry together. That is why, lad, when you lie down tonight, you will see them turning in the draught like bells that nobody rings.
