Peony and foliage bouquet on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A bouquet of two peony-like blooms, smaller buds and leafy sprigs runs up the forearm along a single central stem. The work uses fine black linework with soft grey shading in the petals and leaves. The design is set against plain pale skin, with a grey t-shirt sleeve and a dark wooden background at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The peonies should never have been sold so late in March, and Ruth knew it the moment the crate came off the van, its paper soaked through and the heads so heavy they nodded against the wire. She chalked two pounds a stem on the board anyway. Commuters rarely looked closely at anything when they were running for the 17:42.

A man in a navy overcoat bought five stems without haggling, which was the first odd thing. The second was that he carried them to the far end of platform four and sat on the bench with them across his knees, like someone waiting for a bus that had stopped running years ago. When the whistle sounded he stood, looked down at the bouquet for a long moment, and laid it on the seat beside him. Then he boarded the train without it.

Ruth fetched it before the guard could sweep it into the bin. She trimmed the stems at an angle with the knife she used for twine, stood them in the water bucket behind the kiosk, and checked the platform every morning for a week in case someone came asking. Nobody did. The buds stayed tight and grey-green at their edges, the leaves stayed glossy, and she began to suspect they were not going to open at all.

On the Friday, old Mr Hollis from the signal box paused at the hatch and asked what she was doing with a bucket of wilting flowers. "Waiting," Ruth said. He shrugged and bought a tea. By Sunday the largest bloom had loosened, its petals falling open like a skirt shaken out on a line. She pinned a card to the bucket in her neatest hand: Platform four. Collect when ready.
