Peony sequence across a back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A sequence of peony blooms in blue, purple, red and pink runs diagonally from the upper shoulder down the lower back, with a red bud at the top. The flowers use dark outlines, soft shading and layered petals, with green leaves and stems filling the gaps between them. Colour ink dominates the composition, which is photographed in natural light against bare skin.

The ferry leaves at four, so you have until the tide turns to lift the roots. Your grandmother's bed runs along the cold side of the wall, where salt blows in off the north sea and nothing sensible grows. She planted the peonies anyway, one root at a time, wrapped in wet newspaper and carried over on the boat in a biscuit tin. You kneel in the rain with a fork and the tin open beside you, and the first clump comes up heavy with clay.

Every bush had its colour and its character. The purple one sulked and bloomed only in June, when it felt like it. The red one showed off to visitors and dropped its petals on the step for the gulls to fight over. The pink was shy, almost apologetic. The blue had come from a cutting her own mother had carried out of a garden far to the east, and in forty years it never once flowered. It put out leaves every spring, glossy and deep as pond water, and she said it was waiting for someone who would notice.
You lay the blue root in the tin first, then the purple, the red and the pink. The red stem had split its green sheath that morning, a tight knot of colour no bigger than a thumb. You wrap it the way she taught you, petals facing up, and the wind rattles the shed door as if it wants in.
On the boat you open the tin once, out of habit. The blue has put out a single bloom in the dark, papery and ruffled at the edges, pressed flat against the wet paper like something that refused to be left behind. You close the lid gently and say nothing to the deckhand, who is already watching the island go grey behind you.
