Phoenix with wings on the side of the torso
Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A phoenix is tattooed across the side of the body, with its head at the upper left and a spread wing shaded in grey and light yellow. Its long tail feathers are drawn in black linework that trails down towards the hip. The wing shading is soft and detailed, while the tail is outlined with crisp, sparse lines against the skin.

The rain has been drumming on the corrugated roof of the covered market since before the gas lamps were lit, and you have stopped hearing it. Your pitch sits at the far end, under a tarpaulin gone the colour of wet slate, and you sell what nobody else wants: bent copper wire, clock hands with no clocks, feathers saved from the bins behind the fishmonger. Mrs Okonedo two stalls down calls it the rubbish stall of birds, and she is not entirely wrong.

A boy comes running in with a carrier bag over his head, asking whether you still have the lantern. He means the cracked brass one with the amber glass, the one you have refused to sell for three winters. You tell him it is not for sale, and he says he only wants to see it. So you lift it down from the hook and light the wick, and the glass throws a low orange glow across the wet cobbles.
The story you tell him is the one your grandfather told you, about a bird that burnt itself out over the old tannery fire and was seen the next morning on the roof of the bus depot, its tail feathers trailing black like smoke over the gutter. He asks if it came back. You say it came back every time someone forgot how to be brave, and the boy looks at the lantern for a long while.
He leaves a coin on the trestle, one of the heavy old pennies, and goes out into the drizzle without his carrier bag. When the rain eases you find a single long feather lying across the lantern's base, grey at the root and pale yellow at the tip, still warm from the flame.
