Pink lilies with swirls on upper back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two pink lilies with dark stamens and spotted petals, one larger above and one smaller below, linked by black scrolling swirls. The petals are shaded with soft gradients of pink and deep red, giving them a three-dimensional look, while the swirls use bold black lines with grey shading. The design wraps across the upper back and shoulder blade, with the lilies set against smooth skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hydroponic bay on Tessellate Ring had been sealed for eleven years when I cut the lock and found the lilies still alive. Two of them, pushing up through a cracked nutrient trough as if nobody had told them the air had turned. I stood in the doorway with my suit light trembling on the wall and counted the spots on the nearest petal, because counting was what I did when I did not know what else to do.

The records called the species extinct. Pink and spotted, the flowers had been bred for the old gardens long before the Drift, and the last viable seed had gone into the vault at Harrow Station when I was still a child on the lower decks. Yet here was the larger bloom, open wide over the trough, its stamens dark as burnt wire and dusted with orange pollen. Its sister leaned beneath it, smaller and half turned away. Between them the sensor vines the gardeners had strung up had grown wild and curled into scrolls, black and heavy, looping around the stems as though someone had been drawing in ink on the air and forgotten to stop.

I took a single petal, sealed it in a glass vial, and logged it under a name the archive would not accept: Survivor, bay seven. Then I sat on the cold floor and watched the smaller flower until the lights dimmed for the night cycle. It did not need me. It had never needed the archive, or the vault, or the sealed doors. It had only needed the water that kept coming, slow and patient, through a pipe nobody remembered laying.

When the lights came back I pressed my thumb to the vial and felt a faint warmth through the seal, which was impossible, and which I decided to believe. Tomorrow I would file a report saying the species was gone. Tonight I left the lock open.
