Pink lily on a shoulder blade
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A large pink lily with spotted petals, long stamens and tapering green leaves, shown in a realistic style. Soft pink and magenta shading gives the petals volume, while dark grey shading behind the flower adds depth. The design fills the upper back and is photographed close up, with a gloved hand visible at the lower left edge.

The lilies were already shedding by the time Dad set the jug on the roof of the Marigold and told me to leave the cabin floor alone. Orange dust everywhere: on the lino, on the tea towels, in the seams of the bench cushions. Mum had bought the bunch off the Saturday stall at Hythe Lock because they were the only flowers left that didn't cost a pound a stem, and she'd said they looked like something out of a painting, all those spotted petals curling back as if they wanted a better look at us.

I spent most of that Sunday on my knees with a damp cloth, and the cloth only made it worse. Every swipe pressed the pollen deeper into the grain of the table. Dad sat at the tiller in his old cardigan, pretending not to watch, the way he did when he was working out how to say something without saying it. When we drifted past the willows at Sutton Bridge, a heron lifted off the bank and the whole cabin seemed to shake with its wings.
"Leave the stamens," he said eventually. "They'll dry on their own."
So I did. I picked the longest one up with tweezers and laid it on a saucer, the way Mum used to keep her spare buttons, and I thought how she'd laugh at me for treating a flower like evidence. We reached the marina at Hemingford before the sun went down. Next morning I washed the saucer and the stamen was gone, and on the cloth beneath it was a ring of orange so faint you had to tilt it to the window to see.
I still don't clean that cloth. Dad says it looks like a stain. I tell him it's the last of the lilies, and he nods as if he knows exactly which ones I mean.
