Colour flash design of a burning pirate ship above an octopus wrapped around an anchor, with skeleton arms and a skull and crossed swords at the top.

Pirate ship, octopus and anchor sleeve design

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A tall vertical design showing a burning pirate ship with a skull-marked sail at the top, sinking into rough sea. Below it, a coral-pink octopus with a green eye coils around a chained anchor, and at the bottom a sunken wreck with a ship's wheel, a cannonball and a pile of skulls. Shading uses dark linework and soft tonal fills on a tan background with green water.

Nobody aboard the Mercy's Lament believed in the octopus until our anchor fouled on something that fought back. Cutlass Dunne swore it was a sea-serpent's tail. Old Pell, who had buried two wives at sea, said it was the drowned quartermaster come to collect his share. I said nothing. I had seen a green eye open beneath the hull, slow and considering, the way a magistrate looks over a man before the sentence.

By dawn the Spanish brig had us broadside and the mainsail was alight, smoke rolling over the swell like a dropped cloak. The captain ordered the chain cut, but the links had locked round the anchor shank and the saw took all night. We went over the side in grey light and watched the Mercy's Lament go down by the bow, her stern lifting like a hand reaching for a rope that was no longer there.

I clung to a spar and watched the octopus rise beneath us, coral-pink and enormous. It did not attack. It took Pell's flour sack of silver from his fist as politely as a steward removing a plate, then drew the anchor chain down into the green, arm over arm, until the ship's wheel winked once and was gone.

Last spring I took a diving boat out past the headland with a student who wanted to film wrecks. We found her where Pell had said she'd be, the cannonball rolled against a ribcage, the crew's skulls heaped in the sand like a bad harvest. The wheel was still there, furred with weed. Something shifted in the gloom above it and an eye the colour of bottle glass blinked once. I dropped a coin on the spokes and kept my mouth shut. A debt paid is a debt the sea will keep.
