Black and grey traditional style forearm tattoo of a man with a pompadour haircut in profile, with script reading Love me Tender and a rose beside it.

Pompadour portrait with script and rose on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey portrait of a man in profile, with a swept back pompadour hairstyle, shaded with fine stippled and smooth tones. Below it, flowing script reads Love me Tender, and a bold outlined rose sits to the right of the lettering. The tattoo fills most of the frame on a forearm, with a plain pale background.

Walter Hale had the ovens lit by four, the way his father had, and by half past the shop smelled of scorched sugar and yeast. The wireless on the shelf was turned low, a crackle of Radio Luxembourg fading in and out over the flour sacks. He was piping a rose onto a wedding cake for the Pemberton girl, petal by petal, while his nephew Terry swept the step outside and sang the same line over and over, badly, through the open door.

Terry had bought the record with his first wages from the bottling plant. It sat on the counter in its paper sleeve, the label already greasy with thumbs. Walter did not hold with boys who sang in bakeries, but he had let the lad put it on the turntable in the back room, and the voice that came out was soft and ridiculous and strangely sure of itself, like a man who had never once been told no.

"Your mother used to play that," Walter said, not looking up. He had never said so before.

Terry leaned in the doorway, flour on his collar. "She did?"

"Every Sunday. Dusted the mantel with it going." Walter laid the last petal, pulled the nozzle away clean, and stood back to see whether the rose would hold. It did. Outside, the sky over the car park had begun to go the colour of weak tea, the first milk float rattled past, and neither of them moved to turn the record off.
