Purple bird and blossom branch on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A purple songbird with a yellow beak sits on a brown branch, surrounded by pink cherry blossoms, buds and green leaves, with two loose petals below. The bird is outlined in bold black lines and shaded with smooth gradients, while the flowers have strong outlines and bright fills. The design is centred on the thigh and fills most of the frame against a pale, blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You were sent up the orchard ladder at first frost with a pail of wood ash and orders from the steward: whatever was singing in the cherry trees of Ostrevan had to stop before the council sat. Nothing sang in Ostrevan in winter. The blossom had been stripped from the branches in autumn, as it always was, and the buds had been counted and locked away with the rest of the kingdom's luck. Yet there it was, a plum-dark finch with a gold beak, perched on a bough that should have been dead wood, its throat shining green where the frost had not yet reached.

You climbed slowly. The bird did not fly. It turned its head and studied you the way the old scrivener studied a smudged ledger, and then it sang a run of notes you knew from your grandmother's lullaby, the one about the river that runs under the mountain to fetch the summer back. Petals came loose from nowhere and drifted past your face, pale red and impossible, settling on the ash in your pail and staining it rose.

You did not tip the pail out. You carried it down against your chest and walked it across the frozen courtyard to the steward's door, and you told him the bird had asked you to carry its message instead. He laughed until he saw the petals caught in the wool of your sleeve. The council sat that afternoon in a room without windows, and by dusk the king had ordered every cherry gate in the realm unbarred.

The trees flowered before the feast of lamps, though no gardener had watered them. The finch was never seen again. But on the sill of your attic window, in the morning, lay a single petal, dry and red and faintly warm, as if it had only just been set down by someone who had decided not to wake you.
